Fireworks explosion on NC island kills 2, hurts 3 (AP)

AP - A second worker has died from injuries he suffered after a fireworks truck exploded on a remote North Carolina Island. » Full Story on Yahoo! News

as if the country isn't in a major recession with 43 out of 50 states in the red and numerous cities having firework displays wasting money that could be used for people in need or people losing their homes - how many people have to die and get seriously hurt every year before fireworks are banned - this isn't the 1800's or even the 1900's the world isn't all red, white and blue and comfy

I'm living on SNAP food credit and my husband's SSI check: I'd rather have my city, Richmond KY,spend whatever spare dollars to donate some Hotdogs, beans and Cornbread for local food pantries.

I grew up going to to Ocracoke, living in Swan Quarter a ferry ride away. This is a quaint little island. It also has the no. 1 cleanest beach in the United States.

That kind of exploasion reminds me of the chemical plant in Henderson, NV that blew up with such voracity, too. That blast was heard, seen, and felt many miles away.

Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms, Explosives? Well I guess they got the job, probably 3 of the 4 were involved. Drunk guy with a cigarette in a truck full of explosives, maybe?

The Henderson plant made rocket fuel for the shuttle's booster rockets. There is a huge difference in the amount of explosives in this story.

I'm wondering if they are bringing in more fireworks for the show tonight, since it seems everything went up all at once.

Condolenses to the families of the dead & injured. "Playing" with fireworks is a very hazardous job.

Can't imagine losing someone on the fourth & being able to ever celebrate it again.

Many cities are cutting back on firework displays due to the cost.
Nancy Pelosi donated a bottle rocket to S.F.

They're concerned about their distance from health care? The gov't. run health care will soon solve that. They won't have any at all....

Not all City governments pay for firework displays. Where I live, the displays are payed for by local business and donations. I am glad these displays are still going on. In these bleak times we need something like this to enjoy. An what a better way than to celibrate our independance. I feel sorry for those involved in the explosion and for the families involved.

Just returned from a wonderful trip to Ocracoke. They really don't need fireworks out there. The sunsets alone are more than adequate. What a tradegy.

Come on CNN; just start reporting that bomb from N.K. went off! It will get more attention than the standard "annual" stories about how dangerous fireworks are...

They chose to live there. They chose to visit there. Their choice not mine.

My thoughts and prayers to those injured and lost.

At least they died doing the job they love the most. Those guys who set up the fireworks are the unsung heroes who make the 4th of july so wondrous for the rest of us.
We have been celebrating with fireworks displays since the beginning of the empire back in 1776. George Washington lighted the fuse on the first fireworks display on Pennsylvania avenue. It's a dangerous profession but the ends justify the means. There have always been casualties, but there is never a shortage of people to work in fireworks arena. It's a great honor to be one of the chosen few. RIP brave men, your deaths will not be in vain. There last words as they succumb to there injuries was "let the show go on". We will honor them with every future fireworks display. The "show will go on".

Somehow they will blame this on smoking and use it as a reason to outlaw cigarettes!

No matter what happened someone died and others are hurt (bad) It's a terrible thing but accidents happen. If this happened to someone close to you I don't think you would like people making jokes. Some people are so hateful and stupid. all I can say is KARMA

Nothing to celebrate this year except the communist takeover of the Obama administration and the end of democracy..... Jefferson's principles are all in vein.

I know exactly how this whole thing started - and the ATF will hopefully prove me right- I have been to Okracoke many times over the years - and the kids who visit there - dont waste anytimes tearing the place up - the Police has had major issues and crimes going on over the past 15 years and its increasing. I can bet you - that some kid (s) [while these guys were unloading the truck] flicked a cigarette into the truck because they thought it would be funny. And instead of it setting off one or a few fireworks - it lit alot of them and injured and killed someone...Someone down there hopefully will discover how it started - but i think my suspicion is correct.
